Google suddenly started showing AI answers in my search results, and it’s making it harder to find the normal links and information I usually use. I’ve tried changing settings but can’t figure out how to disable it, and I need help getting Google Search back to the way it was.
You usually can’t fully turn it off in Google Search right now. Google treats AI Overview as part of search, not a normal toggle. Annoying, yep.
What you can do:
-
Use the Web filter.
After you search, click Web. This hides most extra panels and shows plain links.
If you don’t see it, hit More, then Web. -
Add this to your search.
&type=web
Or use this format:
Google Search
That forces a web-links view for many searches. -
Make a custom search engine in your browser.
Use:
Google Search
Then your searches skip a lot of the AI stuff by default. This is the best fix imo. -
Try another search engine.
DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Kagi, even Bing without Copilot view in some cases. Not perfect, but less cluttered. -
Sign out or switch regions.
Some AI features roll out by account, country, and test group. This sometiems changes what you see.
If you mean the Gemini stuff in Android or Google app, that’s seperate. Say which device and app, and ppl here can give the exact steps.
You probably can’t truly disable it in normal Google Search, but I’d check one thing people miss: Search Labs.
If AI Overviews or similar stuff got enabled there, go to Google Search Labs and turn off anything related to AI experiments. On desktop, click the beaker/flask icon near the top right of Google Search if it shows up. In the Google app, tap your profile pic and look for Labs. Sometimes that’s the culprit, sometimes it isn’t.
I’ll slightly disagree with @himmelsjager on one part: signing out/region switching can change behavior, but it’s kinda hit-or-miss and not really a fix, just a workaround that may stop working tomorrow.
Also check this if you use Chrome:
- turn off “Help me write” and other AI-ish browser features in Chrome settings
- disable Google app updates if a recent app version changed the search layout on your phone
- on Android, if the Google app is showing AI stuff, try Settings > Apps > Google > uninstall updates, then test it
If this is happening in the Google app and not the website, that matters a lot. Google keeps mixing search, Gemini, and app experiemnts together, which is super annyoing.
A lot of this comes down to not disabling AI completely, but forcing Google to show classic web results first.
What I’d do instead of only hunting settings:
-
After any search, switch to the Web tab.
If you do not see it, hit More and choose Web. That strips out a lot of the clutter and usually removes the AI summary. -
Make that your default habit by searching with extra filters like:
- adding
-ai - adding more exact keywords
- using quotes for phrases
Not perfect, but it reduces AI-heavy result layouts.
- adding
-
If you use a browser, create a custom Google search bookmark that goes straight to web-only results. That is honestly more reliable than waiting for Google to offer an off switch.
-
Consider a different search engine for research-heavy queries. Slight disagreement with @himmelsjager here: Labs is worth checking, but for many people AI Overviews are now baked in, so the real fix is changing how results are opened, not expecting a master toggle.
Pros of ‘’: can improve readability if you are organizing search tips or browser workarounds.
Cons of ‘’: no direct value here unless it actually includes a web-filter shortcut or search cleanup feature.
So, short version: use the Web results filter, save it as a shortcut, and treat Google’s AI like something you route around rather than fully disable.
