Some apps that I know are installed on my iPhone have disappeared from my Home Screen and App Library, and I’m worried I might have accidentally hidden them in settings or Screen Time. I’ve tried searching by name, restarting my phone, and checking updates in the App Store, but they still don’t show up. Can someone walk me through all the ways to unhide or reveal hidden apps on iPhone, including from restrictions, folders, or any hidden sections, so I can get them back quickly?
Happens a lot on iPhone, so here is a full checklist to track it down.
-
Basic search check
• Swipe down on the Home Screen.
• Type the exact app name.
• If it shows under “App Store” only, it is not installed.
• If it shows under “App” but tapping it does nothing, you have some restriction or bug. -
Check “Hidden Home Screen pages”
Sometimes whole pages get hidden.
• Long press on an empty area of the Home Screen until icons jiggle.
• Tap the row of dots above the dock.
• Make sure all Home Screen pages have a check mark.
• Tap Done. -
Check App Library groups
Some apps sit in weird folders.
• Swipe all the way left until you hit App Library.
• Use the search bar at the top there.
• If the app appears, long press the icon.
• Tap “Add to Home Screen”. -
Make sure the app is not “Offload App”’d
Settings can remove the app but keep the data.
• Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
• Scroll and find the app.
• If it says “Offload App”, tap it, then tap “Reinstall App”.
• If it says “Delete App” you already have it installed. -
Reset Home Screen layout
This pulls every app back into a default layout.
• Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
• Tap “Reset Home Screen Layout”.
• This removes custom folders and positions but brings every visible app back. -
Check Screen Time restrictions
Restrictions often hide whole categories.
• Go to Settings > Screen Time.
• If Screen Time is on, tap “Content & Privacy Restrictions”.
• Make sure it is off for testing.
Or if you need it on:
• Tap “Allowed Apps” and enable the ones you want.
• Tap “Content Restrictions” > “Apps” and set to “Allow All Apps” to test. -
Check for “Remove from Home Screen”
For third party apps, you might have hit “Remove from Home Screen”.
• Open App Store.
• Search the app.
• If you see “Open”, tap it.
• With the app open, swipe up to go Home.
• Then long press the app in App Library and pick “Add to Home Screen”. -
Check for profiles or MDM
If it is a work or school phone, an admin profile might hide apps.
• Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
• See if there is a profile or MDM installed.
• If so, some apps might be blocked or auto deleted.
You need IT support to change that. -
iOS bug quick fix
If nothing works, try this:
• Force restart the phone.
• iPhone with Face ID: Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold Side button until Apple logo.
• iPhone with Home button: Hold Power and Home until Apple logo.
• After reboot, search again.
Small display glitches often clear after a force restart. -
Check iCloud purchase history
If you are sure you had the app but do not see it:
• Open App Store.
• Tap your profile in the top right.
• Tap “Purchased” > “My Purchases”.
• Filter by “Not on this iPhone”.
• Reinstall from there.
If you post which specific apps are missing and if Screen Time is on, people here can narrow it down more.
Couple more angles you can try that weren’t really covered in @viajeroceleste’s (otherwise great) checklist:
- Confirm they’re actually assigned to your Apple ID
Sometimes apps seem “installed” because you used them on another device, but they’re not tied to the current App Store account.
- Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account
Make sure you’re signed into the same Apple ID you used when you first got those apps.
Then in App Store > your profile > Purchased > My Purchases, check if the missing apps are there at all.
If they only show under a different family member (Family Sharing), they might be restricted or not visible under your own account.
- Check for region / country issues
If you ever changed your Apple ID’s country or region, some apps literally vanish from search and the App Store. They just disappear like they never existed.
- Go to Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Country/Region
If you changed regions since you last used those apps, that might be why: the apps are no longer available in your current store, so they won’t reinstall and won’t appear in purchase history in the usual way.
In that case your only real options are: - Switch region back (if possible)
- Or accept that the apps are gone in your current store
- Search by developer or feature, not just app name
Occasionally Spotlight search gets weird, or you misremember the exact app name. Try:
- In App Store, search the dev name if you remember it
- Or search for a unique feature/keyword the app had
Sometimes you realize you had a similar but different app and that’s why nothing is showing up.
- Check if they’re “built in” but toggled off (for system-ish apps)
For stuff like Mail, Safari, FaceTime, etc:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset
- Choose “Reset All Settings” (not erase).
This is more extreme than @viajeroceleste’s Home Screen layout reset and it will nuke Wi‑Fi passwords and some preferences, but it can bring back system apps that got silently hidden or glitched.
- Look for focus modes hiding entire pages
This one bites a lot of people:
- Settings > Focus
- Open each Focus you have (Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep, custom ones)
- Check “Home Screen” inside each
If “Custom Pages” is checked, that Focus might be hiding the page your apps are on whenever it’s active. The twist: iOS sometimes leaves a Focus stuck on or scheduled in the background so you don’t notice it’s filtering the Home Screen. Turn off Home Screen customization inside Focus and test again.
- Check if you’re using different user spaces via Guided Access or Restricted Mode
If anyone ever set up Guided Access for you:
- Triple click the Side button while on the Home Screen
If something pops up about Guided Access, back out of it. Guided Access can seriously limit what you see if it gets left on in the wrong context.
- When all else fails: treat it as corruption, not “misplaced apps”
If apps are missing from both the Home Screen AND App Library, and you’re totally sure they’re supposed to be available in your region and under your Apple ID, that can actually be a database glitch. In that case:
- Backup to iCloud or computer
- Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings
- Set up as new iPhone first, install one of the missing apps fresh from the App Store
If it appears normally, then you know your old Home Screen / app database was damaged. You can then decide if it’s worth restoring the backup or just rebuilding clean.
I’d start by double checking:
- Are those missing apps visible in App Store search at all?
- Are they in your purchase history under your exact Apple ID?
- Did you change country / region or join/leave Family Sharing around the time they vanished?
Those answers narrow things way faster than just poking around layouts and restrictions again.
